虽说无一物,尘埃处处盖。未经勤拂拭,何知镜非台?

What we tend not to realize is that the world we contact exists solely in the mind.

Which is not to say that an objective, "real" world does not exist, but rather that it is impossible for us to contact that world other than through the filters of our senses, which are integrated into a whole by the mind/brain/soul/whatever it is that is aware no matter what you call it. The eye is not a window, but more like a webcam; sensing light, converting it into data, then using a computer to decode that data and change it back to an image that we can understand. But we are unable to know how much of that data reflects what is "real".

So we create, from the basic senses, to our sense of values. This wavelength of light is like that, it is called green. This pattern of vibrations is nice, let's call it music. This pattern isn't, let's call it noise. This sensation is pleasurable and many people agree, let's assume it's a worthy pursuit. This belief is held to be right by people whose opinions I value, hence it's right.

If we fail to realize that all we know is a world that we have created on our own based on the conditions that we have experienced, we fail to realize the full range of options that are available to us. We feel outrage at transgressions, then we feel that it is "justified" that we are outraged, because we have a good reason, because it is a typical reaction. Then we might not realize that we can address transgressions without being outraged, or we might be outraged without ever addressing the transgressions. Outrage is not the best or only response, but often we feel that it is.
