I think that at any time, to varying levels, we believe that we deserve to be happy, that life should work out fine and all that. That's why we get so upset when that doesn't happen. Thing is, from the rules of probability any amount of misfortune can happen to any number of people. Coupled with the huge world population that we have now, this adds up to a number which is small in comparison with the entire earth, but is daunting from an individual's point of view. It's like every single disease or accident that could happen is blindfolded and allowed a shot at all the people you know. Eventually something is bound to hit someone.

I'm grateful for every day that I manage to beat the statistics.
