虽说无一物,尘埃处处盖。未经勤拂拭,何知镜非台?

Our existence, ultimately, is shaped. The will to survive and reproduce shaped by evolution. The will to pursue fame, wealth, love and something or another shaped by society, shaped by the media, shaped by what the country wants us to believe. Shaped by what we want to believe.

As such there are no absolutes. It should not, for example, be absolutely taken for granted that one should value survival over all else. The value of survival is shaped by experience just as something else may be shaped into a value that exceeds survival. When we see the homeless guy on the street you can pity him for not having a home, or you can envy him for not having to be a corporate slave.

Hence it is always possible to unshape yourself, or shape yourself in a different way. We are not solids, destined to stand till we are worn to dust. We are not fluids, destined to take the shape of the containers we are forced into. We are not gases, being swept around by unseen forces. We are, at times, compelled to take one role or the other. However our role is never fixed eternally.

We are free.
