虽说无一物,尘埃处处盖。未经勤拂拭,何知镜非台?

Musou・無争

Perhaps, at least in times of health and peace, what we suffer the most is our stubborn unwillingness to accept the suffering.

Of course it is undeniable that our external circumstances cause us pain and discomfort. However, once we come to the point that pain and discomfort are experienced, it is already unavoidable. What often happens is we protest, or we blame, we think of ideas to justify our anger. It is as if accepting that something undesirable has happened and not doing anything about it is a defeat. So we try and do something, even if protesting or blaming or justifying does nothing to help.

But there is no defeat because there is no battle to start with. Acceptance doesn't mean that one condones what has happened. It simply means that one realizes that at the present moment this particular instance of suffering has already occurred and nothing can be done, and one lets go. One can always act to cut losses, or plan to prevent future occurrences, however, the fact remains that this particular instance of suffering has already occurred, while most protests, blaming and justifying are an attempt to deny even this unchangeable instance. They are an attempt to fight a lost battle.
